The Alphabet Soup

It is hard to keep up isn’t it?

What new letters get added to LGB after the T in 2015?

LGBTQIA+ seems to be the current, relatively stable acronym in use, so will probably change tomorrow.

LGB are the sexual orientations, Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual.

None of the other letters represent sexual orientations.

T is for Trans, What is Trans?

Q stands for queer – a word many homosexuals find offensive, particularly those who were victims of ‘queer bashing’ which was the vernacular for homophobic attacks in the 70s and 80s.

I is meant to include Intersex. But people with an intersex condition find their inclusion in this list offensive, too. Indeed the preferred term is ‘Difference of Sex Development’.

As for the A, it represents the asexual – those with no particular sexual desire.

The plus sign + implies there are more identities to be included – make one up!
